S.W.E.E.P.

As a church, we pledge ourselves to certain values and priorities (as we promise in our Baptismal Covenant).  We as individuals and as a congregation pledge to be about the things captured by the acronym S.W.E.E.P.  Our goal is to monitor our follow through in each area – so that we actually “do” what we’ve “pledged ourselves to do.”

Because we promise to “Seek and serve Christ in all persons,” we offer Service.
Because we promise to “Continue in the breaking of bread and in the prayers,” we offer Worship.
 Because we promise to “Continue in the Apostles’ teaching and fellowship,” we offer life-long formation and Education.
 Because we promise to “Proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ,” we offer Evangelization.
 Because we promise to “Strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being,” we offer Pastoral Care.

We become members of the Church through Holy Baptism
In the Episcopal Church, we participate in a "Baptismal Covenant" found in our Book of Common Prayer (1979 edition).
In our Baptismal Covenant, we:

  • Renounce satan, sin, and evil (p 302);
  • Turn to Christ and accept Him as our Savior (pp 302-303);
  • Believe in God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit (p 304);
  • And we promise to be a people given to Service, Worship, Education, Evangelism, and Pastoral Care (pp 304-305).

We pledge this as individual believers and as a community of believers,
and we act individually and corporately in living out these promises in our daily lives.

At St. Paul's Cathedral, our structures and programs fall under the above five areas.
An additional sixth area is Administration.

Read on for examples of our commitment to Service, Worship, Education, Evangelism, and Pastoral Care.
